    Fri, December 18, 2026

6 weeks after your e-filed return is accepted. If you have no refund by then, the department says to contact it.

NCDOR says: If it's been more than six weeks since you received an acknowledgment email, call the Department.

This is an estimate for information only, not tax, payroll or legal advice. It only adds the NCDOR's published time to your date; it does not know your return's status. Check the official tool for that.

Why a North Carolina refund can be delayed

The NCDOR lists these causes:

  • A math error or other adjustment to the return
  • More than one form type used, so the return must be sent back for correction
  • Missing or incomplete information, such as signatures, ID numbers, bank details or W-2s and 1099s
  • Selection for additional review to protect against identity-theft refund fraud
