California Paycheck Calculator 2026

California has the highest state income tax in the country: nine progressive brackets running from 1% to 12.3%, plus an extra 1% mental-health surtax on income over $1 million. On top of income tax, every W-2 employee pays 1.3% State Disability Insurance (SDI) in 2026 — and since 2024 there is no wage cap on SDI, so it applies to every dollar you earn.

The calculator below applies the 2026 federal brackets, FICA, and California's progressive brackets with the state standard deduction ($5,540 single / $11,080 married). SDI and the millionaire surtax are called out separately in the FAQ so you know what else comes off your stub.

The result is an annual 2026 tax-liability estimate apportioned across the pay frequency you choose. It does not reproduce employer withholding from your Form W-4.

  • This is an annual federal and state income-tax liability estimate apportioned across the period you choose. It is not employer payroll withholding.
  • It does not collect Form W-4 steps, pay date, year-to-date pay or withholding, residence/work-state interaction, or local tax.
  • State schedules are an interim planning model. Filing combinations without a sourced schedule are unavailable rather than silently approximated.

California income tax in 2026, briefly

California uses graduated brackets, so income within higher bands is taxed at higher marginal rates. Married filing is offered only where the data contains an explicit married schedule.

Figures use 2026 rates and are estimates for planning — not tax advice.

California take-home pay by salary (2026)

Planning estimates across common annual salaries in California. Figures assume a single filer with no 401(k) or other entered deductions. Contributing pre-tax can reduce income tax but also reduces current take-home cash, so it does not automatically increase net pay.

Frequently asked questions

Does California have a state income tax?
Yes. California uses a progressive state income tax with rates that rise across income brackets. California also withholds 1.3% SDI on all wages (2026, no cap) and adds a 1% surtax on income over $1M — neither is modeled here.
How much is taken out of my paycheck in California?
Pay is reduced by federal income tax, FICA (6.2% Social Security up to the $184,500 wage base plus 1.45% Medicare), California state income tax, and voluntary deductions such as a 401(k). Enter a salary and pay frequency above for the full breakdown.
What is CA SDI and why is it on my paycheck?
California State Disability Insurance funds disability and paid-family-leave benefits. In 2026 it is withheld at 1.3% of all wages with no cap, so someone earning $100,000 pays about $1,300 a year on top of income tax. It isn't included in this calculator's headline number.
Why is California withholding so much higher than other states?
Three things stack: the highest top-end state brackets in the US (up to 12.3% plus 1% over $1M), a small state standard deduction ($5,540 single), and uncapped 1.3% SDI on every dollar of wages. A $150,000 earner typically loses roughly 7–9% of gross to the state before federal tax and FICA.
Is this the amount an employer will withhold in California?
No. This tool estimates annual federal and state income-tax liability and employee payroll taxes, then divides the annual result by the number of periods you select. Employer withholding uses pay-period wages, Form W-4 details, state forms and payroll rounding.
How is this estimate calculated?
We estimate annual federal income-tax liability from 2026 brackets and the standard deduction, employee Social Security and Medicare taxes including Additional Medicare Tax where applicable, the available state schedule, any local rate you enter, and the cash effect of entered deductions. Credits and a full Form W-4 are excluded.
How reliable is this California paycheck estimate?
It is a planning scenario, not a payroll prediction. It does not model credits, every benefit rule, work/residence-state interactions, year-to-date withholding or all state payroll programs. Your pay stub and filed return are the relevant records.
