Frequently asked questions

How do you convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide the annual salary by the number of paid hours in a year. At a standard 40-hour week across 52 paid weeks that is 2,080 hours, so a $52,000 salary is exactly $25 an hour. The quick mental shortcut is to halve the salary in thousands: $60,000 is roughly $30 an hour.
Should I use 2,080 hours or subtract vacation?
Use 2,080 if your holiday and vacation are paid, because those hours are already inside the salary. Subtract them only when comparing against an hourly job with no paid leave — that comparison is where salaried roles usually win, since an hourly worker taking two unpaid weeks earns 4% less.
Why is my hourly rate lower than this in practice?
Because salaried exempt employees are not paid for hours past 40. A $75,000 salary is $36.06 an hour at 40 hours a week but only $28.85 at 50 hours. Run the schedule table on any salary page to see what your actual week is worth.
Does the hourly figure account for tax?
The headline conversion is gross. Each salary page also shows estimated 2026 take-home across a dozen representative states, because state income tax changes the net figure by thousands of dollars a year on the same gross pay.
