How unemployment benefits are worked out
Unemployment insurance is run by each state under federal rules. When you file, the state looks at your base period, usually the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters, and checks two things: that you earned enough, in enough quarters, to qualify, and how much to pay each week.
Most states divide your highest quarter's wages by a number near 25 or 26, which replaces about half of a full-time week's pay. Georgia and Illinois use your two highest quarters, North Carolina uses your last two quarters, and Michigan takes 4.1% of your highest quarter. Every state then caps the result at a weekly maximum, and most also limit how many weeks you can collect.
Some maximums are fixed in state law and rarely change (California $450, Florida $275, Georgia $365, North Carolina $350). Others move with wages: Texas resets its figures each October, Illinois each January, and Michigan's maximum rises to $614 for claims filed on or after January 1, 2027.
We researched the ten most populous states. Pennsylvania is not covered yet: its benefit comes from a long published table rather than a formula, and we could not confirm the current maximum. Ohio is not covered yet: its benefit uses an average weekly wage over qualifying weeks, and we could not find an official source for the 2026 maximums.
